Love Your Heart - Endearing!

I recently read LOVE YOUR HEART by country music singer Tim McGraw, and singer-songwriter Tom Douglas, to my three daughters ages 6-10. They all sat attentively while I read the fast-paced, brightly illustrated story about Katie and her upcoming school talent show. I think every little girl wants a special relationship with her Daddy, and Katie and her Daddy definitely demonstrate this on these pages! The story focuses on Katie and her Dad discussing what talent she might choose for the upcoming talent show. Katie's antics are endearing and fun to read about and her Dad is just as endearing with his non-critical and loving responses. Katie can't decide what to do however and Dad suggests that they ask God, who gave Katie her many talents, which talent is right for the show.

In the end, Katie sets aside her own excitement and plans of being in the talent show spotlight to help a friend who can't finish her routine without some help. Katie demonstrates a selfless act that is a perfect springboard for discussion after the story ends. Katie's Dad doesn't disappoint, and commends Katie for her decision and tells her he loves her talents, but loves what is inside of her the most. The story was a bit jumpy from one scene to the next, often leaving me feeling like I missed a sentence or two, but overall it was a really sweet story.

I felt that the small nod to God for our talents was nice and left room for parents to insert their own feelings about this to their children. More depth about how to seek God in this would have been great though. For example, "Let's go pray about it." from Katie OR her Dad. It is still a teachable moment though, that for me, reminds children that their talents are from God and that seeking Him in our choices is the right thing to do. A Heart-warming story!
